If you can, then do

On Tuesday an amazing and wonderful thing happened, but just like Barack Obama said in his speech, this is not the change, this is our chance for change.

"This victory alone is not the change we seek -- it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you."

We have a man at the top of our government now, but he can only be the catalyst to our fuel.   It is so very important that we don't sit back and simply wait for things to change.   We must enact that change from the bottom up, and help everyone regardless of where they stood before Tuesday, because now we must stand together.   It started many months ago, but we now must make sure it doesn't end.

Here's how I think we can get it started.

President Obama is going to give the majority of us a decent tax cut.   Take just a little bit of that money and pass it down and out to those who are not as well off as you are.   Do it now.   I am personally challenging you to pass just a little of what you'll get from President Obama down to those who need more.   I strongly encourage you to make it an automatic reoccurring transaction.    Most charities will do this for you, or you can easily set up on-line bill pay systems to send a check every month.   It is the least we can do with what we have now been given, and it makes it an on going part of us.

There are many organizations out there worthy of your help.    As suggestions, I currently give to the following organizations:

  • Heifer International who gives animals to the needy across the world and actually teaches them how to raise, care and breed the animals to sustain their families.   They are also encouraged to pass along any new animals they breed to others; to pay the gift forward.
  • Feeding America / Second Harvest who manages to take the food that everyday Americans don't want, and is close to simply being thrown away, and quickly deliver it to those who need it.

As my personal part in this, hopefully the tiny stone that starts the rock slide, I will today start donating $25 a month to Amnesty International.   A group that looks after those that fall through the political cracks and are forgotten, a group that has won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Give what you can, be it more or less than my $25. Even if it's $5, give.   Make helping those worse off than you a regular part of your life and conscience.   Remember, it was little things such as this, en mass, that brought Barack Obama to where he is now.

Don't let it stop there.   If you can, then do.
